5/29/2023 0 Comments The gashlycrumb tinies full bookThough written out here in full, it is worth the small expenditure to buy a copy so it can be read without hindrance. I particularly like the demise of Xerxes… Inventive, fun and a good cautionary tale for parent’s of curious children… Y is for YORICK whose head was knocked in The Gashlycrumb Tinies: Collectors Edition by Gorey, Edward and a great selection of related books, art and collectibles available now at. Perhaps there is a second volume out there… This is I suppose a rather macabre volume – however, I deal with all sorts of small children on a daily basis, and am regularly surprised how they survive…often there doesn’t seem to be much attention given to them as they crawl out of our store, towards the escalators… A list of rather unlucky children, perhaps, then again it is a compendium of children who through want of a little care and attention, come to grief. It is not, though a book for those of a nervous disposition.Īn alphabet of sorts. There is something really rather wonderful about this book.

It will probably leave you with a bunch of questions: Why does Coleridge speak in such an old-fashioned voice? Why does the poem sound so corny? Did Coleridge think this poem was a big joke? Why is the Mariner saved after committing such an atrocious act? And, our favorite: Why on earth did the Mariner shoot the albatross!? None of these questions are stupid or silly. It's about an old sailor who stops a wedding guest from entering a wedding celebration, and says, essentially, "I know you want to get your drink and your dance on, but now I'm going to tell you a really long story about how I got my entire crew killed and almost died myself because I acted like a jerk while sailing the far reaches of the globe."Ĭhances are that this poem is unlike anything you've read before. Even though Samuel Taylor Coleridge 's Rime of the Ancient Mariner is one of the most influential poems in the English language, it's still a doozy of a confusing read. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Dog Days by Karen EnglishShe continues to have a constant flow of ideas for new stories, and that’s great for children’s literature. Gavin had lots of friends at his old school, but the kids here don't even know that he's pretty good at skateboarding, or how awesome he is at soccer. English has retired from teaching but not writing. Dog Days English, Karen Lexile & Reading Level: 710 Synopsis: It's tough being the new kid at Carver Elementary. Some of those everyday situations that English writes about were inspired by her students and children in general, who she described as “genuine and quirky and funny and full of love.” Although her books are realistic in that they deal with relevant topics, English prefers not to focus too much on “poverty and struggle.”Īny parent or educator looking to pick up something from English, has plenty to choose from as she writes picture, chapter, and middle grade books that feature male and female multicultural characters. Based on the synopsis of Don’t Feed the Geckos!, it seems as if English is continuing to fulfill her desire to portray not only African American but other children of color in everyday, universal situations. Her novels have been praised for their accessible writing, authentic characters, and satisfying storylines. The third book of Karen English’s chapter series, The Carver Chronicles, was released on December 1st. Karen English is a Coretta Scott King Honor Award-winner and the author of It All Comes Down to This, a Kirkus Prize Finalist, as well as the Nikki and Deja and The Carver Chronicles series. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Michel foucault punishmentHe lecturerd in universities throughout the world served as director at the Institut Francais in Hamburg, Germany and at the Institut de Philosophi at the Faculte des Lettres in the University of Clermont-Ferrand, France and wrote frequently for French newspapers and reviews. Revision Mythmaking is a strategic revisionist use of gender imagery and is a means of exploring and attempting to transform the self and the culture or, in other words, to "subvert and transform the life and literature women poets inherit". Instead of just studying prior works though, it is the revision of old texts to create new ones. Feminist revisionist mythology tends to fulfill at least one of these goals. She cites the goals of feminist criticism as (1) developing and uncovering a female tradition of writing, (2) interpreting symbolism of women's writing so that it will not be lost or ignored by the male point of view, (3) rediscovering old texts, (4) analyzing women writers and their writings from a female perspective, (5) resisting sexism in literature, and (6) increasing awareness of the sexual politics of language and style. Lisa Tuttle has defined feminist theory as asking "new questions of old texts". Feminist revisionist mythology is feminist literature informed by feminist literary criticism, or by the politics of feminism more broadly and that engages with mythology, fairy tales, religion, or other areas. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Raymond feist magicianFeist, his worlds and books, on the internet. We first meet Lynsey as a recently-wounded combatant, confined to a wheelchair and with a kind caregiver named Sharon (Jayne Houdyshell) before she heads back to New Orleans to move back into her childhood home. While Lawrence and Henry imbue each scene they share with oscillating doses of humor and melancholy, the final product feels somewhat strained and stunted, particularly in its investigation into the hellish reality of actively trying to heal. Their burgeoning connection propels the film through a (slightly laggy) 91-minute runtime, the two taking turns divulging harsh, intimate truths about their imperfect pasts. She meets James (Brian Tyree Henry, arguably the powerhouse of the two) in her hometown of New Orleans, driving her busted truck into his auto body shop by mere chance. Jennifer Lawrence plays Lynsey, a former Army engineer who suffers a traumatic brain injury in Afghanistan and returns stateside as a result.
